How to buy cheap travel health insurance

Random Scenario: Imagine you are skiing down your favorite slope in (insert country of choice here) with reckless abandon. You expertly whip around pine saplings and dodge boulders. You’re having the time of your life. Being the thrill seeker that you are, you suddenly veer right down what looks like a wonderfully challenging path. Sliding around a particularly large boulder at breakneck speeds, you don’t see the snowy edge and you are suddenly airborne.

Stomach in your chest, you free-fall into oblivion. It’s gonna be a while before you land and a sudden thought occurs to you, seemingly freezing time and splaying the words across your life like a modern advertisement:

Hopefully you did your research  before embarking in a totally random scenario like the one above. Truth is, said scenario happens all the time.

There is a lot of information out there about cheap travel health insurance. I suggest you take your time and do a Google Search to see what best suits your needs. The difference between planning a vacation vs a Round The World (RTW) trip can be two, totally different things. If you know you’re just going to go visit the family for the holidays, like you do every single year, you probably don’t even bother to think about travel insurance. But you might be considering it if you’re planning an RTW trip.

For an RTW trip, or any multi-destination trip for that matter, you want some type of security. You don’t want that constant nagging thought at the back of your head, what if? A million and one things can go wrong. Then again, nothing can go wrong. But you will always know that if something happens to you, you can get taken care of. Travel Insurance companies all over have different plans, and some may be more suited than others. Some charge extra to make changes to your plan, while others do not. It all depends on what you need.

I personally use World Nomads travel insurance. It’s flexible, has what I need and is very affordable. They don’t charge for changes, and if you decide to extend your trip, there’s no hassle from them. Just pay more for however many months you need. They are very detailed in what they do and everything about the website is straightforward to use.

How to buy World Nomads travel insurance.

If you’re a USA resident, your starting quote should be $199. Not bad for 3 months right? But what does all of this cover? Be sure to click on View Full Policy Wording to get all the details:

For instance, lets use the above scenario. You would NOT be covered for ‘extreme skiing, heli-skiing or skiing outside marked trails‘. But if you were skiing, at a normal speed on a marked trail, fell and broke your arm, you would be covered. These are the types of things to look out for when selecting your insurance. If there is a death in the family, World Nomads will send you home. If your trip is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, they cover that too, up to a certain amount. Make note also, that you are not covered for pre-existing medical conditions, should they arise while overseas.

World Nomads does have a 24 hour hotline that you can call in the event of an emergency. A representative closest to you will help you get medical help, make phone calls, and even arrange emergency medical evacuation. There is a lot involved in the details, so once again, read all the policy wordings. It’s not as boring as you might think.
